Percy Burrell Anniversary Commemoration

In honor of one of the most influential figures in Fraternity history, President Mongiovi has formally declared that March 22, 2014 will be an “Official Day of Remembrance and Dedication in honor of the memory of Brother Percy Jewett Burrell.” The complete proclamation from President Mongiovi can be viewed by clicking here.

Along with this formal remembrance, the Fraternity has planned several commemorations in honor of Brother Burrell. The cumulative effort behind these initiatives is to increase the awareness of Brother Burrell’s contributions, and to create a Fraternity-wide celebration not just of the man he was, but also of the ideals he embodied.

Special Hard-bound Commemorative Volume of the Complete Writings of Percy Jewett Burrell to be Published.

The writings of Brother Burrell are, in part, available on the Fraternity’s website, but never have his writings been collected together in their entirety. We will be organizing and publishing the complete writings of Percy Burrell into a hard-bound book, which will then be available to brothers through the Sinfonia Store. This will be a spectacular resource through which to view the Fraternity’s history, Object, and the words of a man whose vision helped to shape Sinfonia. Be sure to check for the availability of the book in the coming months.

Competitions & Contests

We’re also pleased to announce several competitions highlighting various aspects of Brother Burrell’s life and work. In honor of the legendary humor of Brother Burrell, for example, we will sponsor a “P. J. Burrell Look-alike Contest.” Brothers can submit photos showing a strong resemblance to our Master Pageant Master, and we will select the three best photos and submit them to the brotherhood at large for popular vote. All three finalists will receive prizes to be announced, including store gift cards and copies of the collected writings. If you or someone you know bears resemblance to Brother Burrell, we’d encourage you to take part by submitting a photo.

Brothers can also take part in a national essay contest. The theme of the contest will be the Object that was so close to Brother Burrell’s heart and so prevalent in his writings. The winning entry will be featured in an issue of the Sinfonian magazine. Refer to the link below for contest details and deadlines.

Chapters are also being asked to present a program honoring Brother Burrell. These performances can include several production elements, and the winning chapter will have their production archived permanently in the National Archives and will receive an expense-paid retreats to Lyrecrest. Contact your local chapter to confirm their participation if you’re interested in attending their performance.

Additional details on these competitions and initiatives, including deadlines and rules, will be released throughout the month at www.sinfonia.org/burrell.
